The Krakow Madonna.
The first novel in the Susanna Shepherd series
It's the first week of September 1992 in Poland. A freakishly hot September. The Berlin Wall has fallen and the Soviet Union has collapsed. A group of American Fulbright Scholars has just arrived at the Polonia Instytut in Krakow for their Country Orientation. Their mission, to increase mutual understanding. One of them, Susanna Shepherd, is pulled away from her desk in the language lab and hurried to the room next door where a dead man lies. Strangled. Detektiv Inspektor Kurek forces her to view the stretched and purple face. Then he insinuates that she is probably the killer. What is wrong with him? What kind of orientation is this turning into?
